Nursery Information
General Information
ENTRY TO AND EXIT FROM PREMISESWhen you bring your child to Nursery please come to the main entrance of the Nursery Unit. The Nursery door will be opened at the beginning of each session and you will 'hand' your child into the care of the Nursery staff. Children are not to be left alone to wait for the start of Nursery. Similarly please meet your child from this entrance and at the end of the session Nursery staff will 'hand back' your child to you. Please do not allow children to play on Nursery equipment while you are waiting.
Children must be brought to and collected from Nursery by a responsible person over 16 years of age (not brothers or sisters from school). If someone other than you, as a parent, will be collecting your child from Nursery please inform the Nursery staff.
If you bring your child to Nursery via the entrance on Herbert Road may I request that you keep to the sides of the playground whilst crossing to the Nursery unit. Please note that the Herbert Road entrance is kept locked throughout the day so parents will be unable to use this entrance at the end of the morning session and at the start of the afternoon session.
Dogs on Premises
Dogs should not be brought onto school premises whether on a lead or not - many children are afraid of dogs and even small dogs can frighten young children. Also the health risks to children arising from dogs fouling pathways and grassed areas are extremely dangerous and can lead to blindness - we know there are always risks regarding this but we obviously try to minimise these in school.
Smoking on School Premises
Please put out cigarettes before you come into the school grounds. Cigarette ends look unattractive around the school and children are tempted to pick them up.
Clothing
During the Nursery day the children will be doing a variety of activities both indoors and outdoors. Please ensure your child is suitably clothed and will not be worried about getting their 'best' clothes dirty. For reasons of safety please do not allow your children to wear jewellery and also ensure that they are wearing shoes which are suitable for running, pedalling bikes and using the climbing frame etc. The children should also wear clothes which they can manage themselves when visiting the toilets. All outer garments (including cardigans and jumpers) must be named. In case of accidents we keep spare clothes in school for changing children, if these are used please wash them and return them to the Nursery unit. All paints and glue used in the Nursery are washable but marked clothing should be washed/soaked in cold water prior to a hot wash - this avoids 'fixing' the paint/glue onto the material.
Other Information
To cover the costs of refreshments and items for cooking, science and technology etc. A 'piggy bank' will be placed near the cloakroom. If you could donate £1.00 each week then this would be a great help.
Young children use a lot of tissues and for their comfort we ask each family to provide one box of tissues each year. Boxes of tissues can then be placed at strategic points around the Nursery!
If your child is absent please inform the school of the reason for the absence, sickness, holiday etc. If your child is absent without good reason for any length of time then a letter will be sent to your home asking you to contact the school as your unwanted Nursery place could be offered to another pupil on the waiting list.
At Christmas the children give a short concert to which parents and other close relatives are invited. This is an important time for the children as it is often their first 'public performance'. Parents are asked to help with the provision of costumes for this concert. During the year informal singing sessions are held to which you will be invited.
We hope your child enjoys his/her time in our Nursery and I am sure he/she will gain many skills on which to build during his/her journey through school!
Parent Teacher Association
The P.T.A. was founded in 1991 and parents are invited to support this important link between home and school. Children need to know their parents are interested and care about the school.
The school has already benefited from fund raising events organised by the hard working committee and we hope this link will continue to strengthen, with your support, over the years.

Parent Helpers
We welcome parental help in school and should you be able to help in any way, please feel free to contact a member of the nursery staff or myself.
Sandy Lane receives good support from parents and I am confident this will continue in years to come. Back to top
The Nursery Day
The Nursery DayPupils will not be actively taught to read, write and 'do sums' but they will not be prevented from doing so if they are capable. Emphasis will be on the development of social and personal skills alongside, literacy, numeracy and scientific concepts. These will be based on the Desirable Outcomes for children's learning.
Good listening skills will be encouraged and appropriate good working habits will be developed during the year through structured play and organised learning opportunities.
The children will be given a variety of experiences - role play, construction, visual, listening, manipulative, quiet and noisy etc. Your child will be encouraged to develop at his/her own pace.
During each session the children will be given a drink and a plain biscuit or a piece of fruit. Drinks will vary, water, milk, squash etc. but all drinks will comply with L.E.A. advice regarding additives etc.
Once the children are settled into Nursery they will visit school to attend assemblies or other appropriate school sessions. This will help the transition to main school next year.
Records will be kept of your child's development and you will have the opportunity to talk to staff and look at the children's work at our three open evenings. Any records kept are intended to help your child develop fully. All parents are welcome to make individual appointments to see Nursery staff at any time. Back to top
