About our School and Caldicot

Caldicot Sandy Lane Infant School opened, in its present building, in September 1965 and has seen many changes during its lifetime. Throughout this time it has always remained a happy, friendly, caring environment which is enjoyed by all the children and Staff. When it first opened its door there were 187 pupils throughout 6 classes and at that time there was no mention of nursery education. Thank goodness things have changed for the better and we are glad to consider our nursery the best in the local area.

We have accommodation for many pupils, at one time having 249 children in 8 classes, 2 classes being in the demountable classrooms. At present we have 101 children on role amongst 4 classes, with 52 much sought after nursery places, 26 morning and 26 afternoon places.

We are celebrating our Ruby Anniversary this year, that's 40 years. So look out for some exciting events throughout the year.

We are fortunate to have several paved play areas at Sandy Lane but the real bonus for our school is the very large playing field which is extremely popular with the children when the weather allows its use. The nursery has it's own secure garden and play area with many outside toys for the children to enjoy.

Our pupils consistently achieve very high standards and these have been recognised in two Ofsted/Estyn inspections both of which praised the school.

" This is a good school. It is a well ordered, caring and supportive community in which the pupils feel safe and happy."

"Caldicot Sandy Lane Infants School is an effective school. It offers a good quality of education and standards are high."

We also achieve good results in the end of Key Stage assessments which are often above the County average and have recently been awarded the Quality Mark by the Basic Skills Agency.

We have several new initiatives which have started this year and are constantly striving to improve and develop our school for the benefit of our pupils.

  • As our move towards a healthy school we have installed fresh filtered water available in bottles for the children to drink at any time.
  • We have spent considerable funds to update and develop our ICT equipment, installing several of the latest computers and printers. We  also make excellent use of our interactive white board and our laptop computers.
  • We have introduced an exciting new resource for teaching literacy called First Steps, which develops the childrens ability to read, spell and write more easily.
  • We have initiated a "walking bus" to encourage the children to walk to school. At first "driven" by Miss Dykes and now run by volunteer parents, it collects children from pick up points and walks them to school in safety.
  • We have begun a fruit tuck shop. The children pay £1 each week and receive a good selection of different fruits each day.

I could go on all day about the achievements of our school but I know the best way to find out about us is to visit us and look around. You are always welcome. If you can't visit us then you can keep up to date with news and events on this web site.
